Season of goodwill to all men

The Pope has - according to Channel 4 News and now I've just found it on the Times website - compared homosexuality to global warming, in that they are doing the same damage to the human race. To quote the Times article... "Saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction." And to quote the pontiff himself: "The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less."

This reminds me of the Tyson Gay/ Tyson Homosexual story. "It means a lot to me," the 25-year-old Homosexual said. "I'm glad my body could do it, because now I know I have it in me."

However, on a more positive note, you can now get the Vatican prayer book on iTunes. Couldn't they just give out ipods to the congregation and do without the priests altogether? (At which point I remind myself that thankfully my Catholic grandmother is not an internet user. Otherwise I would never hear the end of it).

And guess what OH decided to focus on in his response to this? AIDS.

But not AIDS just anywhere - AIDS in Africa. And criticising DFID's support for AIDS programmes there. What a nasty, nasty piece of work he is.

Oh, and bofl - on your response to me on that other post. I will never post comments from people who think they're being big and clever by using 'amusing' names for the Prime Minister which reference his disability. It is really, really pathetic.

Looks like the season of goodwill is over boys.

The Pope has [...] compared homosexuality to global warming, in that they are doing the same damage to the human race.

They are, the quantity of damage in both cases being precisely zero.

Ah, it's funny how things change though. Forty years ago, being a bit gay was considered a serious mental disorder requiring persecution by the state, whereas now criticism of being a bit gay is considered a serious mental disorder requiring persecution by the state. We never do seem to find a happy medium in this country, do we?

Ian B - welcome to planet earth. I'd love to visit your not-quite-parallel universe some time.

You object to my view that homosexuality isn't a matter for public concern? I'm sorry about that. I'm a bit of a geek, you see, and I've always felt this intense fury at what the state did to Alan Turing for being a bit gay. There ain't nowt more dangerous than people who want to cure other people for the common good, kind of thing.

They injected him with hormones, you know. For the good of society. A cautionary tale for our times, I think.

And the second bit?

Second bit? If you mean my reference to state persecution of criticism of homosexuality, I meant that it is part of that same mindset. "Homophobia" is a mental disorder; it suggests that the person who holds the opinion has a mental problem that needs correcting. It's the pendulum swinging too far. So I'm suggesting the radical idea that neither of these things are a matter for correction by the self-appointed wise.

If you didn't mean that by the second bit, apologies for the incorrect answer :)

Very sad what institutional celibacy does to the mind, isn't it?
