And yet more awards for Bristol

Bristol wins city of the year... and Cabot Circus wins best shopping centre "in the world". So... I have the carpark of the best shopping centre in the world in my constituency... yay!

How the hell did Bristol win an Urban Environment award with such piss-poor public transport?

And Cabot Circus is just another shopping centre. Don't believe the hype!

Hey Kerry don't knock that Car Park. If it wasn't for that I'd have to go back to waiting at the bus stop in the cold and rain for those ghostly buses that are only rumoured to arrive when the planets are in alignment.

I didn't knock the car park. I am immensely proud of it. Wish it didn't have so many lights on all night 'though. But I suppose they can't tell where the one car left in there is parked.

Seeing Mr First Bus tomorrow, with Dawn Primarolo.

Can you just kick him in the bollocks and tell him "that's from the people of Bristol"?

Is having the 'Best Shopping Centre' something to boast about? Rows upon rows of identikit shops that exist on nearly every other street in Britain, not for much longer I grant you.

Don't forget Kerry, you also have the most violent street in the UK on your patch.

That must make you so proud.

Sorry, how rude of me. LINK

Blogger - a more painful punishment would be to make him ride his own buses

Kerry, do you seriously believe that the awards of European 'city of the year' and, according to the local paper, the world's 'best shopping centre' are fair, unbiased and dispassionate? The most useful, valid and reliable assessments have these qualities.

If you look at the kind of people who have an interest/involvement in what is being judged and those who have an interest/involvement in the organisation doing the judging, its often the same people or types of people. To me this is subjective assessment by a narrow group which amounts to circular, self-congratulation!

There's still a chance the car park could win the much coveted British Parking Association's 'Car Park of the Year' award.

As far as I can see the award (for 2007) is still held by the multi-storey at Musgrave Park Hospital, Taunton and there's no news yet from the BPA on this year's winner. Although their Civil Enforcement Awards, hosted by Dermot Murnaghan have been announced.

Fingers crossed, eh? Could be a big feather in Bristol's cap.

The best car parks are at Heathrow.

At least we've got a 'Yo Sushi' now, just in time for the recession!

Still payday tomorrow, and I've either had a 'fiscal stimulus' or a pre-election bribe (not sure which) thanks to New Labour and their union paymasters delaying my payrise for 7 months. I might be able to fork out for a plate or two of Sashimi on Saturday.

I thought payroll had made a mistake, our union rep (which I'm not a member of and did support by striking for more pay) tried to tell me it was because of 'tax changes'.

I can read so I called payroll and they confirmed what I suspected. Labour and the unions are up to something - expect an election next year!

Steven_L said...

*sorry which I did NOT support by striking

Bristol Dave said...

I've never agreed with the Unions striking. There seems something deeply hypocritical about a Union donating (rather large) sums of money to the government, supposedly supporting it, and then striking against it.

When the Tories come to power, you can have the Kent police beat them up again!

Kerry, after a brief bit of polling, I'm pleased to confirm that as of 11.36pm last night 92% of Bristolians favour you kicking Mr First Bus in the bollocks for us over more pointless discussions.

The people have spoken. Ain't democracy grand?

Come on Kerry, at least Mrs Dale defends himself when he gets abuse

Kerry said...

Who on earth were the four people who voted for the second option?

Anonymous said...

Usual suspects - Greens - Bowring and Hutt and two others?

Glenn Vowles said...

Just like to point out, as a Green, that I was not one of the 'two others' the Bristol Blogger mentions here. If there is such a things as a 'typical' Green I'm not it!

Bristol Blogger, talking about democracy, since when was it OK for the returning officer to announce on a public forum how particular individuals voted?

There's nothing on the poll portal to say that the site owner will know how you voted, nor that he will feel free to broadcast that information to all and sundry. Perhaps there should be?

All rather odd coming from someone who depends so much on a lot of other people respecting his anonymity.

Well Chris, it's not really a matter of grassing up your vote mate, I don't think he's giving anything away here... if I may quote...

"Just to make sure I have no need to send any Christmas cards this year, I’m going to put in a word for First."

Now Chris, are you going to tell me that you voted one way, yet said something different?

By the way Kerry, did you poke him in the eye? Did you stamp on his fingers? Did you really stick the boot in? We, the people long to hear the juicy details.

Anonymous said...

Yes Chris I guessed the votes from the comments rather than from having any access to voting data.

I see there's now six votes for pointless discussions, although I reckon Mrs Davies might've voted twice. And a whopping 95% of Bristolians wanted Kerry to kick the Managing Director of First Bristol in the bollocks!

What a result.

Chris Hutt said...

BB, you shouldn't take the votes "for pointless discussions" too seriously. In my case I just instinctively vote against the obvious, then felt that I had to cobble together some rational for it, which inkedbloke referred to.

If such discussions keep the likes of Kerry and Dawn occupied for the odd hour doing something that's unlikely to have any material impact on the rest of us then perhaps they're justified on that basis alone?

Ah. First Bus.

About 5 or 6 years ago, I was working in Bradley Stoke. Used the bus, to do the right thing, until one Friday before Xmas, I ended up waiting 3 hours for it.

Note - this was an every 15 minutes service, passing thru' Cribbs Causeway, then Aztec West, then Sadly Broke (again, no doubt), Parkway and back into town down Filton Avenue.

What had happened was that Cribb'ds was rammed with Xmas shoppers. Buses could get in, but not out. But rather than tell the drivers to divert PAST Cribbs, they gave them no such information. 12 buses ended up gridlocked in Cribbs. I walked the 2 miles on a cold December night in the rain to Parkway.

First were pleased to compensate me with a £5 travel voucher, allowing me 1 2/3rds free journeys.

Beyond incompetence.

At the same time, I had to do some business in Newcastle. First Bus also. £1 to cross the City there, AND they have a Metro too.

First have been screwing Bristol commuters for years, and they have been doing it with the council's connivance. Newcastle Council make First apply fair fares. Why can't Bristol?

Worst public transport in the country.

Worst council in the country.

By the way, facilities to help the disabled, such as my ex, who has MS and has trouble walking, from the car parks to the shops are non-existent as far as I can see.

Have you contacted your councillor or MP? I've taken up a similar issue with Cabot Circus and the Council.
