Fell in love with a boy

Apparently Barack Obama has chosen Joss Stone to sing his official campaign theme. That is plain wrong on so many levels. Should have gone for the White Stripes. That would have been fun. (A friend of mine has asked if I'm deliberately trying to alienate as many groups of voters as possible between now and the next election by slagging off their musical heroes. That is why I'm holding fire on Cliff Richard. Just in case. Hell hath no fury like a Cliff fan scorned.)

The White Stripes.

Here's Obama's 'Ipod Top 10':

1. Ready or Not Fugees (1996)
2. What's Going On Marvin Gaye (1971)
3. I'm On Fire Bruce Springsteen (1985)
4. Gimme Shelter Rolling Stones (1969)
5. Sinnerman Nina Simone (1965)
6. Touch the Sky Kanye West (2006)
7. You'd Be So Easy to Love Frank Sinatra (rec. 1961)
8. Think Aretha Franklin (1968)
9. City of Blinding Lights U2 (2004)
10. Yes We Can will.i.am (2008)

Not too bad. With the exception of U2 (although I don't have much time for the Fugees either), there's only minor quibbles to be had here like the poor Springsteen choice (betraying his poor touch with blue collar workers?); the fact he should have gone for something from the Stones off Beggars Banquet while 'Think' and 'What's Goin' On' have been overexposed to the point of tedium.

But overall there's not much to sneer at here.

He's still a really dodgy politician with sticky-out ears and a good marketing team, mind.

So come on, it's about time you nailed your colours to the mast. What's your Top Ten?

I haven't got enough hours in the day to get a proper top ten together. Neither do I have teams of marketing men, PRs, private pollsters and focus groupies to work it all out for me Obama/Cameron style.

But you can have my 'top ten most played' off iTunes.

The only caveat with this is that I haven't had a working iPod for ages and don't really use iTunes except to play music for my son to jump around on the bed to before he has a bath.

This might explain the slightly upbeat feel and the lack of any tracks off Lou Reed's Berlin:

Another Girl, Another Planet - The Only Ones

Pleasant Valley Sunday - The Monkees

Masterplan - Diana Brown And Barrie K Sharpe

Like a Prayer - Madonna

Bohemian like you - Dandy Warhols

Move on up - Curtis Mayfield

You Got The Love (Frankie Knuckles remix) - Candi Staton and the Source

Live Forever - Oasis

Hey Ya! - Outkast

Firestarter - The Prodigy

Oh, and anyone who comes on here claiming I've just spent the last half hour playing 'Firestarter' over and over again to get 'Yesterday Once More' by The Carpenters out of the top 10 is a liar.

Well I can't find anything too objectionable in there. Another Girl Another Planet is phenomenal.

Strange that some bands - e.g. Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip and, strangely, Abba, are virtually unlistenable on an iPod. I thought with Abba it might be because they're too 'busy', but Flaming Lips sound great; best way to listen to them.

My Top Ten in no particular order except the Top Three...

1. New Dawn Fades - Joy Division
2. Different Drum - Lemonheads
3. Temptation (7" version) - New Order
4. Everything Flows - Teenage Fanclub
5. Too Many DJs - Soulwax
6. At&T - Pavement
7. Bring it on Home to Me - Sam Cooke (or Change is Gonna Come???)
8. Reach Out I'll be There - The Four Tops
9. White Man in Hammersmith Palais - the Clash
10. Idiot Wind - Bob Dylan

There, that took all of two minutes, and not a PR man or pollster in sight!

P.S. Nothing wrong with the Carpenters!
