Public Service Announcement

Just for the vegan(s) amongst you. Booja Booja, makers of extremely delicious (though rather pricey) vegan truffles, have now moved into the ice-cream market. Fresh and Wild in Bristol has three flavours: chocolate, ginger and maple pecan. These things are important.

Fresh and Wild eh? Interesting company you're keeping Kerry as Barbara Janke is also known to shop there ...

Never mind. Come the bright day, all we need to do is surround Fresh and Wild on a Saturday morning and the city is ours!

Come on, I'm a vegan, what do you expect? But I do buy my soya milk at the local Spar!

When I think of vegans I always think of those health food shops in the 80s.

You know, the ones with the crap punning names - 'Full of Beans'; 'The Whole Meal' - staffed by genuine 60s casualties who were always big players in the local CND group and who you'd normally cross the road to avoid (some things never change).

These were the places where you could buy a jar of Whole Earth peanut butter; a veggie pasty (always with a really solid brown wholemeal crust); a Provamel chocolate soya dessert; a big packet of TVP (ideal for turning a chilli a strange light brown/yellow colour and making it taste of cardboard); the latest Class War and a copy of Viz for the princely sum of about £2.50.

And the only person you were ever likely to see there was your dope dealer ...

It's not the same since US multinationals bought all these places up and ruthlessly promoted them to Clifton housewives through the Sunday supplements is it?

We once had an uninvited guest staying with us. Turned up looking for somewhere to crash for a couple of nights, ending up staying three months. He ate all our food, smoked all my friends' cigarettes, drank all their beer, did no housework, paid no rent (and didn't wash very often either). Then, sensing we were getting more than a little fed up with his company, he decided to cook us a meal. He cooked an entire industrial-sized bag of TVP, not realising it expands when hydrated. His budget didn't run to spices or seasoning (which admittedly don't make much difference to TVP). It was truly vile.

Fresh and Wild is good for 'vegan junk food' (fake bacon, fake chicken, fake everything) but ridiculously expensive for a lot of other things. The Sweetmart in St Mark's Road is brilliant - but it closes at 7pm. (Don't know where you get the idea of Saturday morning shopping from - I'm far more likely to be found rushing to Costcutters at 10.55pm on a Friday night).

I don't venture up Gloucester Road much, so can't vouch for the shops up there. There's a nice little health food shop up Fishponds Rd, near Straits Parade - good for popping into when I've been to Fishponds police station or the Vassall Centre. And Betterfoods is OK, but doesn't stock Cheezly. These things, as I've said, are important.
