Earth Hour 2009

As you can see from their website, WWF show a pleasing appreciation of just who is most important in the big scheme of things. Earth Hour is on 28th March, from 8.30pm, and it's basically about switching off the lights and having parties in the dark, whilst highlighting the important issue of climate change. And it's the Wildlife people not the Wrestlers.

Bristol has been asked to take a lead on this, given its green credentials and even greener aspirations. Speaking of which, I was looking at an email from the Stop the Barrage Now campaign a moment ago, which refers to a character named 'Green Vowles'. Sounds vaguely familiar....

I shall honour the moment by turning on every light in the house.

Why do I publish comments from Old Holborn? Because it makes him look stupid.

At least you publish his!

How apt. The people of Bristol invited by the Labour Party to take a lead in sitting quietly in the dark.

Well if that's your idea of partying!

Anyway, aren't there more important things for you to be commenting on tonight?

Kerry - list the evidence to indicate that Bristol is becoming greener, to support your assertion about city green credentials.

Thanks

Green Vowles!!

That's rather dictatorial!

Avoiding the question??

I was merely pointing out, admittedly rather tersely (I was short of time I think), that you have referred to Bristol's 'green credentials' without backing it with evidence. I've seen this a good deal from all sorts of people.

So, in your view what is the evidence that indicates that Bristol is becoming greener?? What is the 'state' of Bristol? Where does it fall on the 'green' scale compared to a sustainable state of affairs? Is the city making a significant move in a greener direction??

So much rubbish is talked about our 'green' city - we need to use proper benchmarks and to keep a sense of scale here.

Glenn, I've linked elsewhere on here to Forum for the Future's decision to 'annoint' Bristol as the UK's most sustainable city - this is partly due to achievements to date, and partly down to aspirations for the future. Surely that's not bad for an endorsement?

That's no evidence at all Kerry. You've not addressed any of my questions!!

Can I presume therefore that when you refer to Britol's 'green credentials' you have no hard evidence in mind at all?? Given what the PM is saying about the importance of green development shouldn't you have more in mind than 'they said its good so it must be'??

Lets look at this issue the other way round. When I refer to Bristol as a city with poor green credentials I have hard evidence in mind eg carbon emissions that are 6 times the sustainable level and a very high ecological footprint - several times the land
area of the city!!

Well why don't you go off and take it up with Forum for the Future and Jonathon Porrit then, and let me know when you've convinced them they're wrong.

Thanks for promoting Earth Hour! Another way you can recruit people to the cause is by creating a Earth Hour group on Commit21.com. Simply create a group about one action that you will commit to do for Earth Hour and recruit your friends, family, and co-workers to get involved in that action as well. When it comes to climate change, simple actions can make huge differences and Commit21 leverages social media to influence networks of friends, family, and co-workers. Check it out at www.commit21.com
