Dorset

The others have gone out for a country walk, but I've decided to stay behind. (It's cold, I have a cough). Only four of us here so far, with more arriving this afternoon. I am under instructions to get a log fire started, but I don't know how. Besides, men love doing that sort of stuff so it seems wrong to deprive them of the pleasure. Signal here is very bad, and I will be in trouble anyway if I spend lots of time on my laptop, so probably won't blog much for the next few days.

Now you've managed to light a fire, you need to learn how to use it.

When hunters bring back meat from hunt you cook food or smoke it for when no prey around. You prepare skins for clothes. Then you go fish.
If no wood for fire use seal blubber.

I've just got back from Dorset. The highlight - it's quiet down there - was passing a homemade road sign on a lane between Church Knowle and Wareham announcing SLOW - KITTENS.

What the hell are kittens doing in the middle of a road? Are they running wild?

Dorset is well known for its kittens, which in boom years can appear in sudden locust-like plagues, stripping the fields of crops and rubbing against people in vast numbers, creating unimaginable quantities of cuteness.

The government has banned them, but incredibly this seems to have had no effect at all.

Bristolbog: In the countryside cats are used to keep the rodents down on farms (to stops them cra**ing and weeing in cereal bins, partly), so yes, many working cats are semi-wild and live in "barns".

We're only a few miles from Wareham, but no reported sightings of any kittens.

Kerry

How are you? You must be busy preparing for an early election. Will Gordy fool the public by holding an early Saviour of the World election? NO Kerry. Mind you the longer he waits, the heavier the defeat. Happy New Year Kerry.

I see your New Year's Resolution was to turn over a new leaf, Terry.

My family hail from Dorset. Its a great county. The people there have a wonderful tradition of self reliance - you must hate it Kerry...with no client state dependency

Kerry.

Full credit for posting my comment, as your site is now moderated, I assumed you would ignore it. There's hope for you Kerry. Now Darling has admitted the smoking ban has helped close pubs, what are you going to do? Interesting that smoking rates are on the up. Govt response was, we are not trying to stop people smoking, just prevent passive smoking. That explains all the adverts about giving up smoking, and the blank packets. I'm so silly, I thought that was to propaganda people into quitting. A shift of goal posts my dear Kerry.

Andy, if you're going to say glib things like that, you should at least put some effort into justifying it.

Terry, there's a difference between 'helping' and 'making' people quit. But that's not an invitation to relaunch the smoking debate on here. (So 2008, don't you think?)

Difference is Kerry, Darling now admits the ban is closing pubs.

They have also been the beneficiaries of millions of pounds of support and grants etc from Europe, along with the rest of the West Country.
Andy, I presume you have a bank account, are you going to reject the 'client state dependency' of support from the state that is probably keeping it afloat?
I know you libertarians like to have it all ways but you guys really should put your money where your mouth is.
